What better way to start my own blog, than with the topic that started this whole journey for me – the Law of Attraction.
Firstly, it is a universal law, just like gravity. I mention this because when I first came across it, I thought it was all a bit ‘woo-woo’. I didn’t want to believe that there could be such a simple way to create your dream life. After all, I had spent my childhood being told (and fully believing) that the only way to create my dream life would be to work every hour under the sun, make huge compromises and not see my family much. Sure, that could work?! Or, I could actually look into this fluffy law of attraction stuff and give it a go!
The law of attraction works on the idea that we can achieve anything that we believe. That we can bring our thoughts into reality and that the Universe will bring us whatever we focus on (be it negative or positive!). In this way, it is, therefore, possible for you to manifest anything you want in your life. From money to relationships, material items to feelings. This is one of the first things I teach my clients about because it can literally change their life!
I thought this too. That’s partly why I didn’t start believing in this process until about three years after I was first properly introduced to it. It can’t be that easy, can it?!
The only catch to this process of creating your dream using the law of attraction is that you have to be consistent. Sometimes you will struggle to let go of thoughts and beliefs. Particularly those that you have held onto for as long as you can remember. It can get emotional, you can start to lose faith and wonder why you ever believed this could work. But the difference is, you’ll be working hard mentally, rather than physically. The rewards from it will far outweigh what you would get by ‘working every hour under the sun’.
So, let’s see where you might be able to improve your chance of manifesting your dreams…
If you’ve seen any of my social media posts you know I like a metaphor, particularly relating to dog training! I try to make sure they are simple though so that even non-dog owners can understand what I’m talking about. So, imagine you lay out 20 dog toys on the floor. Then, one morning you tell the Universe (which in this metaphor is the dog) that you really, really want a dog toy. So off trots the dog, he picks up the tennis ball and brings it straight to you. You’re now frustrated. You didn’t want the tennis ball, you wanted the red bow. You don’t understand why the universe hasn’t got your back. How could it do this to you after you’ve read so many self-help books and listened to so many podcasts?! You’ve even started a morning routine for heavens sake!
The Universe/dog just chose a random toy because you never specified which one you wanted. Imagine translating that into real life. Perhaps you ask for ‘more money’ or to ‘be more successful’. You will get those things but perhaps not in the way you wanted. You might get an extra £5 in the bank or a few extra visits to your website, but you didn’t specify what ‘more money’ or ‘more success’ really looks like to you. As a result you’ll feel disappointed. Maybe you’ll even give up asking the Universe for help because you think it ignored your requests.
This follows on perfectly from the last point. The law of attraction gives you more of what you want and what you focus on. If you focus on the abundance already existing in your life and you tell the universe how grateful you are for it all, you will receive more of it.
You might be thinking, “how can I feel abundant when I feel like I have nothing to my name? I’m scraping by financially and all of my clothes have holes in!” There is always abundance in your life, you’ve just got to look for it! One of my favourites, which I learned from Tara Punter, is to look in your cutlery drawer. I bet there’s an abundance of cutlery in there!
Let’s apply this to point number one. If you barely notice, let alone show gratitude for receiving ‘more money’ in the form of an extra £5, the universe is going to assume you don’t want more of it!
This might seem strange. After all, surely you would only be asking for things you’d actually want?! Well, sometimes we get caught up in what other people’s dreams are rather than our own. Perhaps your friends are talking about that dream trip to the Maldives or buying themselves a Range Rover. So you quickly add that to your vision board and meditate about it. But then when you think about those things, you realise they aren’t your dream, they are someone else’s.
I did something similar for years. Every year, my new years resolution was ‘get skinny’. Guess what, it never happened. What I realised this year is that I had been asking for something I didn’t want. So this year I have decided to work towards being the fittest, healthiest and strongest I’ve been. (Of course, I’ve added specific measurements to this goal!). This is something I’ve been on the way to achieving for a couple of years now, but because I’m not ‘skinny’ I thought I’d failed on my new year’s resolution.
When setting goals and going through the process of learning about the law of attraction, make sure it’s what you really want. A good test is to ask yourself this. If I received this thing/feeling tomorrow, would I be happy? Or would I think ‘oh, I didn’t want it quite like that’? If I had become ‘skinny’ overnight, I would have realised that it wasn’t actually what I had meant to ask for!
And finally, persevere. Even when it feels like nothing good is coming. Even if you’re wondering if you’re doing this ‘right’, don’t give up. In the words of Gabriele Bernstein, the universe has your back!
